The Walled Garden appears nearly complete, while Biltmore House rises on the hill beyond. The stone carvers, aristocrats of the labor force, rode in borrowed passenger cars. The rest of the workers sat on supplies and construction equipment in the open freight cars. Although the rail spur was dismantled when construction was finished, remnants of at least one trestle are still visible and may be seen on the Behind-the-Scenes Legacy of the Land Tour. Included with all Biltmore House admission types, our informative Audio Guides share Biltmore House history; here guests learn about its grand Banquet Hall. Although the Omni Grove Park Inn isn’t as close to Biltmore as the other properties we’ve mentioned, there’s no way we could leave it off this list!

Pick a weekday during one of these months, and you can enjoy a sunny day at the Biltmore, see the Garden in full bloom, and avoid the crowds. November and December, when Biltmore is decked out for Christmas, will always be pricier than other months. The Vanderbilts hosted notable figures like Edith Wharton, Henry James, and Theodore Roosevelt at their North Carolina mansion. Additionally, George and Edith sold over 86,000 acres to establish the Pisgah National Forest. Browse such stay packages as our Chihuly at Biltmore package, which includes exhibition admission and Biltmore House admission, plus daily breakfast, an exclusive exhibition keepsake, and more. And though the grounds aren't as sprawling as they once were, there's certainly still plenty to explore.

George Vanderbilt died suddenly after an emergency appendectomy at the age of 51. Encyclopedia Britannica reports that his wife sold 87,000 acres of the Biltmore Estate's land to the U.S. Forest Service, starting a gradual shrinking of the property that continued until just 8,000 acres were left. Vanderbilt also personally curated the expansive library, and was known at the time for his love of books. The Biltmore Estate had 250 rooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, 34 bedrooms, an indoor pool, a library with 10,000 books, and priceless artworks and antiques around every corner. Discover the story of this opulent Gilded Age manor, and virtually wander its grounds in the Biltmore Estate photos below.
